Key agreements will help further improve workflow and expand registry reporting capabilities
ATLANTA & CHICAGO, March 31, 2008 – McKesson is showing the newest extensions to its
Horizon Cardiology™ cardiovascular information system (CVIS) this week at the 57th American College
of Cardiology Annual Scientific Session and Exposition (ACC) in Chicago. McKesson is demonstrating
the Horizon Cardiology solution and other market-leading technology solutions designed to support
cardiac care at ACC in booth #10012.
Horizon Cardiology provides improved support for non-invasive vascular reporting. The feature
is a natural extension of the unique single database design and includes support for more than 20 different
vascular procedures. The system’s new Web Client drives workstation functionality to the user via the
Web. This client also allows for batch downloading of studies and gives the end user a choice of
compressed or uncompressed DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) images based
on the bandwidth available.
McKesson’s market-differentiating Horizon Cardiology Hemo™ hemodynamic monitoring
system now supports charting through the entire peri-procedural event, providing a new standard of care
for the Integrated Cath Lab. Providing both holding area charting and in room nurse charting leverages
the single database design to provide a unique identifier to track individual clinician charting. In addition,
this in room nurse charting allows for full parallel charting with the hemodynamics monitor. If necessary,
the in room nurse charting can assume full control of the hemodynamics function from within the
procedure room.
In addition, McKesson is pleased to announce several strategic relationships that leverage the
innovative design of Horizon Cardiology. This open architecture, with its focus on standards, strategically
allows McKesson to combine these companies’ creative solutions into a single and integrated
environment.
McKesson’s CVIS integration with Mortara Instrument, Inc. will allow Mortara ELI™ series
electrocardiographs to communicate directly with the McKesson CVIS. The DICOM-enabled ELI devices
will communicate bi-directionally and receive a DICOM Modality Worklist (MWL) with patient
demographics and order information from Horizon Cardiology, enabling healthcare organizations to
operate within a closed-loop ECG workflow. Technicians will no longer need to manually enter
demographics at the electrocardiograph, greatly reducing data entry errors and costs associated with
them. The solution is showcased in McKesson's ACC booth with the Mortara ELI 350 electrocardiograph.
McKesson and Mortara have joined a growing group of industry leaders supporting use of the
DICOM standard for ECG. Adoption of DICOM ECG changes the paradigm of proprietary
communications protocols and hardware that is commonplace in diagnostic electrocardiography. With
DICOM, no proprietary communication protocols are used, protecting the customer from device
obsolescence and decoupling the choice of information management solution from device solution.
“Mortara has long recognized the tremendous value of open standards like DICOM,” said Justin
Mortara, PhD, vice president, Mortara Instrument. “DICOM enables healthcare providers to pick best-inclass
devices that seamlessly integrate with systems like McKesson’s Horizon Cardiology. With
McKesson joining a growing list of industry supporters of DICOM ECG, we can now confidently state
that the majority of U.S. hospitals are poised to take advantage of this important ECG development and
move away from historical, proprietary ECG management solutions."
Also in support of enhanced Echo workflow, McKesson has integrated clinical application
packages from TomTec Imaging Systems, GmbH to facilitate the viewing, analysis and reporting of 3D
and 4D echocardiography images. TomTec works to bring 3D and 4D images to the fingertips of the
cardiologists who need them, when and where they need them. Cardiologists will be able to view and
manipulate echo images from echo carts at any Horizon Cardiology workstation, freeing them from the
need to move between workstations to get the critical information they need.
Additionally, McKesson has signed an agreement with Cedaron Medical, Inc. to integrate its
industry-leading registry platform into the Horizon Cardiology offering. Cedaron’s CardiacCare software
for registry support will provide full data support to CVIS users for these major national, regional, and
state registries.
“McKesson’s singular cardiology infrastructure is truly unique in the industry,” said Rod
O’Reilly, vice president and general manager for McKesson’s Medical Imaging Group. “We continue to
work with our customers to enhance our already robust offering. McKesson not only provides the best
CVIS product, but through partnerships and standards-based integration we also bring the best of breed
enterprise imaging solutions to our rapidly growing customer base. This helps them achieve real clinical
value and operational effectiveness.”
